week 3 challenge: a photo of a favorite thing // write about its importance

My guitar is one of the things I cherish the most. It actually is my father's, but I like to use it more than he does. One day I was scuffling through old family pictures and I saw my dad as a teenager holding a guitar on his lap that looked exactly like the one he has today. I asked my mom if it was the exact same guitar as the one in the picture, and she said yes. I wonder if it really was.

I just started learning how to play during the school year, and my dad would help me find songs to play and teach me when I didn't know how. I remember the first few nights of when I was learning how, when we stayed on the laptop taking turns playing the guitar while looking for chords; and I showed him the music video of  "I Won't Give Up" by Jason Mraz. We listened in silence, nodding and humming the tune to the catchy chorus. I guess it's safe to say it's one of the things my dad and I have in common and one of the things that bring us together.

For the past 4 months, I've been playing and self-teaching myself how to play songs. It's in my bucket list for the year (14 before 15, tell me if you guys want to see the whole list) to learn 100 songs on the guitar. Occasionally I would just close my room door and play and sing until night time. When my dad asks what song I'm playing, I tell him and even play the whole song to him. I've noticed how much I've evolved as a newbie who can't even play one bar chord, to someone who can teach herself to play a song.

My [dad's] guitar is something I would never replace or give away. I've only been using it for a few months, but it has helped me become a better, more independent and creative person.

  1. wow, this was poignant and beautiful. i can easily feel where you're coming from, being that i self-taught myself to play on my dad's guitar years ago, and he bought me mine when i was ready. it's so very valuable to me -- i wouldn't trade it for anything. xx

  3. That is really neat! I'd love to learn how to play the guitar, but to be honest, I'm not sure if I really have the diligence to put that much time into it. x

  6. You must be really good at the guitar/really inspired to become good at it. I wish it was the same with me for violin, but...I don't know if the violin is really MY instrument, you know what I mean? I've always wanted to play piano, though. It's my "life dream." But for now, I just have to grit my teeth and stay with the violin. oh why do other people play so beautifullyyyy?

And I Won't Give Up is an amazing song. Glad another person likes it.
You sound (PUN!!!) like an interesting person, Jianine. I'm glad I found your blog.
